Mary Ashworth Scholarship

The TEAL Mary Ashworth Scholarship was established by BC TEAL in 1988 to honour Mary Ashworth on the occasion of her retirement from the University of British Columbia for her outstanding contributions to BC TEAL and the ESL profession in Canada.

Description

The TEAL Mary Ashworth Scholarship is a travel scholarship for a graduate student attending a university in British Columbia and enrolled in a TESL/TESOL, Applied Linguistics or related graduate program. The scholarship can be used by a graduate student to cover travel and/or accomodation costs for attending or participating in a TESL Canada Conference or a TESOL Convention.

Criteria

  • Applicants are evaluated according to ESL/EFL teaching experience and service, in addition to classroom teaching to the ESL/ESL community
  • Applicants for the TEAL Mary Ashworth Scholarship must be a current members of B.C. TEAL in good standing
  • The recipients are expected to make a presentation at one of the BC TEAL Conferences and submit a written report to the TEAL Charitable Foundation Board and write an article for the BC TEAL Newsletter Editor within one year of receiving the scholarship.

Amount of Scholarship

The Mary Ashworth Scholarship is valued at up to $1,000.00 [CAD]. The scholarship funds will be awarded once the TEAL Charitable Foundation receives an invoice showing travel expenses. The recipient must submit a final report and trip receipts to the TEAL Charitable Foundation within 90 days of his/her return from the TESOL Convention or the TESL Canada Conference.

Application Deadline

The deadline for the Mary Ashworth Scholarship is November 1st of each year. The recipient will be notified in writing within six weeks of the application deadline by the TEAL Charitable Foundation.

Application Procedure

Applicants need to submit:

  • i] a letter describing reasons for wishing to attend the TESOL Convention or the TESL Canada Conference.
  • ii] a curriculum vitea specifying the applicant’s ESL/EFL experience and current university program at the University of British Columbia.
  • iii] two letters of reference attesting to the value of attending the TESOL Convention or TESL Conference in terms of the applicant’s studies and professional development.

Application Submission

Applicants are required to submit one copy of their application. All applications should be postmarked on or before the November 1st deadline. Submit all completed applications for the Mary Ashworth Scholarship to:
