Nan Poliakoff Memorial Award

The Nan Poliakoff Memorial Fund was established in 1998 by her family, colleagues and friends. The award commemorates her passionate commitment to excellence and her many contributions to the ESL profession in British Columbia.

Description

The Nan Poliakoff Memorial Award provides funding to support professional development for an ESL educator teaching in British Columbia.

The Nan Poliakoff Memorial Award can be used by the recipient for:

  • i] participating in ESL teacher training workshops or courses,
  • ii] registration fees or travel costs to attend or present at ESL conferences,
  • iii] ESL materials development and for ESL publications.

Criteria

Applicants will be evaluated according to:

  • their ESL/EFL teaching experience;
  • their service, in addition to teaching, to the ESL/EFL community and to TEAL as a volunteer;
  • special consideration will be given to applicants interested in the teaching of writing, in testing, or in teacher training;
  • special consideration will be given to applicants applying to attend a conference in order to present of a paper or take part in a panel discussion or symposium;
  • applicants will be asked about other sources of funding, potential or secured.

Amount of Award

The Nan Poliakoff Memorial Award valued at up to $750 may be given each year depending on the income from the endowment. The Nan Poliakoff Memorial Award will be granted once the TEAL Charitable Foundation receives an invoice with receipts showing expenses.The recipient must submit a final report and trip receipts to the TEAL Charitable Foundation within 90 days of his/her return from the conference.

Application Deadline

The application deadline for the Nan Poliakoff Memorial Award is November 1st of each year. The successful recipient will be notified by the TEAL Charitable Foundation within six weeks of the application deadline.

Application Procedure

  • A detailed application letter outlining the applicant’s reasons for applying for the Nan Poliakoff Memorial Award;
  • A curriculum vitae which specifies ESL/EFL experience and university studies;
  • Two names of references who can attest to the value of the proposed activity for the applicant and profession;

Application Submission

Applicants are required to submit two copies of their application – one original and one photocopy of all documents by the deadline.
