Pat Wakefield Scholarship
The Pat Wakefield Scholarship was established in 1985 by BC TEAL in cooperation with the British Council to honour Pat Wakefield at the time of her retirement for her leadership and commitment to the field of English as a Second Language in British Columbia and Canada.
Description
The Pat Wakefield Scholarship is a travel scholarship for an ESL educator to travel to a Commonwealth country for the purpose of professional development or research in the field of English as a second language.
Criteria
Applicants will be evaluated according to:
- ESL/EFL teaching experience;
- Service, in addition to classroom teaching, to the ESL/EFL community
All applicants must be educators who have distinguished themselves in the field of English as a Second Language in B.C. and must be members in good standing of BC TEAL at the time the application is made.
The recipient is expected to deliver a presentation (a presentation or written article) on his/her research experience and/or professional development for the benefit of BC TEAL members and to also submit a written report to the TEAL Charitable Foundation.
The recipient of the scholarship will be announced at the BC TEAL Conference and in the BC TEAL Newsletter. The recipient must use the scholarship within 18 months of being notified by the TEAL Charitable Foundation.
Amount of Scholarship
Sufficient to cover travel costs and /or accomodation to a Commonwealth country up to a value of $3,000 [CAD]. The scholarship funds will be awarded once the TEAL Charitable Foundation receives an invoice with receipts showing travel expenses. The recipient must submit a final report and trip receipts to the TEAL Charitable Foundation within 90 days of his/her return.
Application Deadline
The Pat Wakefield Scholarship application deadline is November 1st of each year. Please note that the successful recipient will be notified by the TEAL Charitable Foundation within six weeks of the application deadline.
Application Procedure
Applicants are required to submit:
- A letter of application, along with a list of educators and the educational institutions the applicant wishes to visit in the Commonwealth country of their choice.
- A curriculum vitae specifying the applicant’s ESL/EFL experience and university studies.
- Two letters of reference attesting to the value of the proposed research or professional development for the applicant and ESL profession.
Application Submission
Applicants are required to submit one copy of their application by the application deadline on November 1st of each year. Submit completed applications for the Pat Wakefield Scholarship to:
