BC TEAL 2014 Annual Conference

Please read this note from conference co-chair Laura Blumenthal:

Although I received many very heartfelt kudos and congratulations for the conference, I felt that I must acknowledge the other people who deserve the praise perhaps more than I do:

Shawna Williams, who, while raising a baby, has been a constant advisor, consultant and supporter throughout the process, as well as designing and putting together the conference booklet single handedly.

Sandra Boehm, BC TEAL’s tireless administrative assistant, who tied up loose ends, answered questions, passed info and requests on to me and Ann, and did countless other tasks, often outside of her work hours, without ever complaining.  The list of things she did is too long to write here.

Joe Dobson, for developing and putting together the political panel – we began talks on this in July of 2013.

Jennifer Pearson Terell, for coming up with the idea of the Pecha Kucha event, gathering the talent for it, and organizing it.

And the following planning team members:

Gordana Sokic, who dealt with the onslaught of presentation proposals – far more than last year, and managed to bring a team of proposal vetters together and to compile the results of two rounds of decisions right in the middle of mid-term marking time.

Mark Styles, who picked up the volunteer committee ball and took it past its first hurdles, and Susan Saint, to whom he passed the ball when his teaching duties had to be his priority.  Susan took that ball and ran with it, making sure that all volunteer requests were met, and that all volunteers were scheduled fairly, consulting with me and Ann any time anything needed the say-so of someone else.

Karen Wonneberger, who eagerly took on the sign-making task and produced the very professional-looking signage we had all over the conference venue.

Lesley Hemsworth and Lynette Manton, who not only helped in the deployment of the signs, but took on the task of being A/V consultants for presenters, and went through, with me, twelve drafts of the presenter information sheet.  At the conference, they tirelessly made adjustments to signage as needed, and made sure the presenters had whatever they needed and that everything ran smoothly.

Janice Penner, who, along with Sandra, took care of all communication with the publishers and exhibitors, and made sure the tables were arranged properly and everything was in place, so that the publishers’ and exhibitors’ area ran smoothly and without a hitch.

And finally, my co-chair Ann Talbot, who, besides all her other tasks and duties, and her lovely, relaxed manner, always gave me a clear perspective on anything where we needed to make a decision together.  Also, at the conference, she managed, on the fly, to find two coat racks, find another room for the folks who suddenly showed up to do testing in the computer lab we had booked, get the coffee breaks and lunch dispensing moved down to the publishers’ and exhibitors’ area at the publishers’ request, and myriad other small tasks.

What all of these people have in common is that they never said, “That’s not my responsibility,” “I can’t do that,” or “Maybe someone else could take care of that.”  Instead they worked with me, Shawna, Sandra, and Ann, and simply did whatever was necessary, despite the uncertainties and unsettling layoffs and rehires going on all around them, to the point where I actually felt like I didn’t need to do much, as everything was in such good hands.
